First pattern British Rimless British Brodie helmet. This helmet is the late model 1915, early 1916 helmet issued by the British and contains the first pattern liner. These helmets were phased out after about six months because of problems with sharp edges of the shell and the fact that the liner was held in the helmet by a single copper rivet which tended to pull through the wool "cap" and leave the wearer minus a liner in their helmet. The problem was resolved by issue of the second pattern liner which had a three point fastening system (both bails and the top rivet) and installation of a spot welded rim to blunt the edge of the shell.
Our helmets have fixed the problem of the sharp edge (they are sanded down and rounded as I have no desire to get sued if somebody does stupid) and with the insertion of a 2" diameter leather disk inside the wool "cap" (you can't see it unless you disassemble the liner). That keeps the rivet from pulling through the wool and leaving you linerless! This is a rare helmet to come across in the wild, so if you need and example to fill your collection or if you are doing an early war impression, this is your girl.
